01.06.2017 Inès Lamunière at the Colloquium “Museums of the 21st Century in Geneva on 1st and 2nd June 2017

The Museums of Art and History of Geneva are organising a two-day colloquium on the future of museums that will address simultaneously cultural, social, architectural and political concerns.
It has become commonplace to observe the major upheavals affecting the museum world over the past thirty or so years. The demographic changes, urbanisation, digitisation, and globalisation, etc., which have been instrumental in bringing about a rapid redefinition of our relationship to the world, have also been factors contributing to a fundamental shift within the museum world. This could be summarized as the deconstruction, at least in part, of a classical and unchanging museum model. Although this old model tends to die out today, no new archetype has yet arisen to take its place, at least on a consistent basis, and the 21st century museum still appears in need to be defined.

Ines Lamuniere will exemplify the attitude of dl-a, / Devanthery & Lamuniere, in architecture by two of their most recent projects for city centers in Switzerland. The Opera House in Lausanne, the national TV Tower in Geneva and other projects still in design phase will be discussed, presenting innovative relationships between the notion of “urban” architecture and its specific atmospheres, in relationship to the question of “image”, program and construction.

The Meret Oppenheim Prize is presented annually to eminent Swiss artists, architects and commentators on art and architecture over the age of 40. The award recognises both the achievement of a major body of work and an influential contribution – both creative output and theoretical reflection – to contemporary artistic and architectural trends. This year, this prestigious award was presented to architects Patrick Devanthéry and Inès Lamunière.

The book Devanthéry | Lamunière: images d'architecture | Deux entretiens, published to mark the occasion, is available here +++

30.04.2010 EXHIBITION InDetails – 20 May to 19 June 2010, La Galerie d'Architecture, Paris

InDetails is an opportunity for architects Patrick Devanthéry and Inès Lamunière to present three projects from their practice whose common denominator is the close, in-depth relationship forged between the practice and its clients. The design and construction of PMI’s operations centre in Lausanne (2006 and 2010), EPFL’s School of Life Sciences in Lausanne (2009) and Geneva’s TSR television tower (2010) investigate how architecture works at every level. These projects’ large dimensions make them fragments of the wider urban fabric; at the same time their material realisation makes them objects in their own right, their effects meticulously controlled down to the smallest detail. All organisations seek to present a strong image of themselves – an image that encapsulates their ethos, raises their profile with the public, and fosters a sense of identity among their workforce. This core “image” is conveyed in the way the organisation operates, communicates and interacts with the public – and also in the design of the spaces it occupies. In their floorplans and sections, site plans and detailing, dl-a show how the concerns of architect and client are connected in the process of creating working spaces for communities as diverse as the global HQ of a multinational business, the genetics and life science researchers at one of the world’s most prestigious universities, and journalists and administrators working for major media group. The project designs are supplemented by large-scale photographs, capturing the distinctive atmosphere of the spaces and materials, and three introductory texts by Joseph Abram, Jean-François Caille and Emmanuel Caille.

03.11.2009 Materiality and construction - FIVE POSITIONS IN CONTEMPORARY SWISS ARCHITECTURE

Conference at Harvard GSD,14.11.2009 – As national boundaries dissolve and we witness the emergence of a global market for architectural design, we propose to revisit the ideological framework of the “national,” examining what labels such as “Swiss” or “American” mean with respect to architecture and the built environment. How are such preconceived notions of “national” differences perceived in relation to architectural thinking? – Our observations suggest that there are alternative ways to pose an architectural “question” or develop a “theme” preceding the work of designing and producing a building: something like an implicit idea of architectural action, allowing the possibility of identifying different “theories of practice”. In order to test this working hypothesis on various “theories of practice” and their relation to the controversial concept of the “national” we have gathered practitioners and educators from Switzerland and the US to engage in a dialogue on similarities and differences in the production, analysis and teaching of architecture. Inès Lamunière will be discussing the concept of “ThickSpace”.

03.07.2009 Natural and Urban, Green and Grey

This book combines the design work and research of two design studios, one at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, the other at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Led by Professor Inès Lamunière, the two studios explore the relationships between natural and built environments by developing designs for large-scale buildings in Manhattan. The book includes essays by the author and by high-profile architects including Adam Yarinsky, Nina Rappaport, Leslie Gill and Billie Tsien. Eight projects by students from Lausanne and Cambridge showcase the research focused on the city of New York.  +++
